Thomas Caruso

1916-1997

Tommy Caruso lived, actually grew up in, the house across the street. I never really got to know him well, but he always had a friendly smile and a "hello" whenever we bumped into each other. He was a good neighbor - the "old timer" on the street.

The paper says that he worked as a courier for the Board of Education and as a crossing guard at the Elizabeth Haddon School, and he volunteered as a Little League coach. Even though he retired a few years ago, I still expect to see him at that corner on West End Avenue, where he would always wave to me as I drove to work.

Tommy's last years were difficult, with Alzheimer's and a stroke taking their toll on him. But he was an independent man, and remained in his home until shortly before he passed away.

I will miss him.
