Francis of Assisi
I became interested in Francis of Assisi many
years ago when my church youth group visited the National
Cathedral and the Franciscan
Monastery in Washington, DC.
Several years later, after having
my wisdom teeth pulled, I was spending a Christmas Eve curled up on the
sofa with an infection. I was thoroughly distracted from the pain
while watching the film, Francis
of Assisi, starring Bradford Dillman.
Why do I like St. Francis?
There are two reasons. First, I suppose it is because he tried to
live his life as Jesus did. Perhaps that takes a touch of madness
that most of us lack. But in any case, I admire him for his willingness
to give up his comfortable life and live according to his convictions.
Secondly, he prayed for peace (I
am, after all, a throwback to the '60s) and cared about all of God's creatures.
